Selfridge Gets Ready to Celebrate Centennial with Open House & Air Show in August

The Selfridge Air National Guard Base will celebrate its 100th Year this year with a bigger and better Open House and Airshow on Saturday and Sunday, August 19-20 at the Harrison Township base.

The base will hold a series of events throughout the year, including military band concerts, special events for veterans, and visits and programs at local schools.

The highlight of the year’s events will be the Open House and Airshow, where the entire U.S. Air Force Thunderbird squad will perform with their six eye-popping (and ear popping) F-16 Fighting Falcons flying up to 700 mph and as close as 18 inches apart.

Performers also include the USAF A-10 Thunderbolts, the USAF KC-135 Stratotankers and more.  Also featured will be world class military and civilian air acts and ground displays of aircraft and equipment from all branches of the U.S. Military, DHS, police, fire and EMS.

According to Brig. Gen. Doug “Odie” Slocum, commander of the 127th Wing, performance isn’t the Blue Angels performance won’t be the only way Selfridge will be celebrating its birthday.  The base will also show off aircraft dating back opening of the base in 1917.

Selfridge Air National Guard Base is one of the nation’s busiest, most diverse and most advanced military installations. Located east of Mount Clemens along the shore of Lake St. Clair, Selfridge ANGB is a Joint Military Community whose major tenants include the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy, Coast Guard, and Customs & Border Protection. The installation is a case study in how a successful Joint Installation should operate. From its synergies of multiple services and agencies, to its economies of scale, Team Selfridge is a demonstration of a successful relationship between government and industry.

Selfridge ANGB is hosted by the Michigan Air National Guard’s 127th Wing, a dual Mission Design Series unit, which operates and maintains the 9,000-foot long runway used for Department of Homeland Security operations and active/reserve Department of Defense service components training. Selfridge is also home to more than 40 tenant units that form Team Selfridge, working together to make the best possible use of training resources and opportunities, unmatched anywhere in the United States.

The Selfridge Open House and Airshow will be held August 19 and 20 at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Harrison Township.  Gates will be open from 8 :00 a.m. to 5 :00 p.m. both days.

Outdoor Hub : Lake St. Clair Offers Prime Summer Bass Fishing
Although mostly known for smallmouths, Lake St. Clair boasts excellent largemouths, too. Ask 10 bass fishermen to rattle off the best bass lakes in Michigan and if nine of them don’t mention Lake St. Clair right off the bat, there’s something wrong with your sample. Lake St. Clair is and always has been one of the best bass lakes—and not only in Michigan, but in the country. In fact, it’s one of the best bass lakes in two countries, as Michigan shares the 430-square mile Great Lakes connecting water with Ontario, Canada.
