Waterfowl Hunting Season

Saturday, September 30th

Waterfowl season in Chatham-Kent is open from the last Saturday in September to mid-December. Goose season extends into early January and an additional week in February.

Being located along the main migratory bird route has several advantages. For the recreational hunter, it offers an abundance and selection of waterfowl to hunt in several protected areas throughout Chatham-Kent.

Marshes and diverse wetlands attract significant populations of ducks, geese and other waterfowl, blanketing areas in Chatham-Kent like Mitchell’s Bay, Rondeau Bay and Walpole Island. This area is known across North America as one of the best in all of Ontario for hunting trophy canvasbacks and redhead ducks. Mallards and bluebills are also common.

The local abundance of waterfowl gives recreational hunters liberal limits on what they can catch in a day as compared to more strict limitations in Michigan.

Professional guide services can take visiting hunters to waterfowl hotspots in Chatham-Kent where certain species are prevalent. Local businesses rent and sell accessories including blinds, clothing, firearms and ammunition.
